Frequently Asked Questions
- Are you in any way associated with Google?
As stated at the bottom of every page of the website, and since KCheckGMail v0.5.6 the first time it is launched: KCheckGMail nor its authors are in any way affiliated nor endorsed by Google Inc. - How can I use my Google Applications for Domains account?
It used to be supported but due to some bad changes at Google KCheckGMail can't completely login. In case it starts working again, to use it is as simple as entering the whole email address in the KCheckGMail's config. Instead of entering mygmail as username, enter mymail@myhostedomain.com. - Why does my password appear as three characters length?
KCheckGMail has a protection hack which makes it store the password in memory only when required (i.e.at login).
When it isn't needed (e.g. editing the settings) a 3 characters length string is used, keeping the real password safe.
There's nothing what to worry about this three characters length password, because even if you modify the settings the real password won't be touched. We do care about security! - How can I make it stop snoozing?
Open the KCheckGMail menu and click "Check Mail Now", this will make it stop snoozing. Note: since version 0.5.7 snooze support has been dropped (not enough good feedback about it). - How can I change the systray icon?
The only way to change the icon of KCheckGMail is by changing the icons set used by KDE. Provided that there icons set contains one for KCheckGMail. - What is the difference between KCheckGMail and the other notifiers?
KCheckGMail is designed to work with KDE and as a prove of it is the fact that integrates very well with Konqueror. KCheckGMail is small, simple, and powered by the powerful KNotify.
Other differences: KCheckGMail can be fully translated!, it has a nice DCOP interface to access different Google Mail information, and more! - Why does the systray icon keep blinking?
KCheckGMail's icon blinks during the login process, only to let you know what it is doing. - What is the point of being able to click a Threads menu item if it opens my inbox?
At the time of writing Konqueror doesn't support the full version of Gmail making the Threads menu items open the inbox and not the desired email.
Since KCheckGMail 0.5.7 by going to "Configure KCheckGMail...", and then to "Advanced", marking the "Open Gmail in simple interface will do the trick. - How can I modify xyz behaviour of the notifications?
KCheckGMail makes use of the powerful KNotify for displaying the notifications. This allows you to enable or disable none, any or all the notifications, execute a desired program, play a sound, flash the taskbar, log to a file, and more!
All these settings and behaviours can be modified by opening KCheckGMail's menu and then clicking "Configure Notifications..." - Can KCheckGMail handle multiple Gmail accounts?
At the moment KCheckGMail can only handle one Gmail/Google Mail/Hosted Domains account at the same time. - Is POP3/IMAP support going to be added?
Short answer: no.
KCheckGMail's pourpose is to notify about new emails in Gmail/Google Mail/Hosted Domains accounts. For those who really want and are desperate for some notifier for POP3/IMAP/MBOX/NNTP notifier there's a program called KOrn, besides the fact that the website looks old, the application does work. By the way, it is part of KDE PIM. - It says that Gmail has been upgraded since the version of KCheckGMail I'm using was released, should I worry?
Short answer: most likely you shouldn't worry.
Time by time Google adds some features to Gmail, when Google does this KCheckGMail warns you because this kind of changes may cause KCheckGMail to behave weirdly or even stop working at all.
The only recommendation is that if it works the way it should, don't worry, and if it doesn't, don't worry either! only check for a new version of KCheckGMail. - It says that Gmail's login procedure has changed and I can't login anymore, what can I do?
KCheckGMail v0.5.6 introduced many code changes that will hopefully keep KCheckGMail working with newer versions of Gmail, but it isn't perfect.
First of all make sure you are allowing google.com to store cookies on your computer (configure it in Konqueror), since this is a requirement as of KCheckGMail v0.5.6.
If afterwards the message still appears the only thing you can do is wait until a new version of KCheckGMail is released. - Who created the icons used in this site?
The website makes use of the Noia icons set for KDE, made by Carles Carbonell Bernado (a.k.a. Carlitus). They were released under the terms of the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL) and can be downloaded from kde-look.org.
Thank you Carles for these great icons! - Why isn't my question listed here?
